Officials plan for growth even as population declines
For the eighth straight year, Calaveras County lost population in the 12 months ending July 1, according to a recently released estimate by the California Department of Finance’s Demographic Research Unit.
Despite that, official state projections of future population, generated by the same Demographic Research Unit, show that Calaveras County is expected to add 9,000 new residents over the next 20 years. Calaveras County’s draft general plan is based on that rosy growth projection rather than the actual decline of the past eight years.
