Influence your community – join the Planning Commission!

The Calaveras County Planning Commission has two vacancies to fill ASAP, one in District 4 (Angels Camp, Copperopolis ) and one in District 5 (Milton, Rancho Calaveras). Find your district here.

The only qualification is that you are a registered voter residing within the District. There are lots of resources on line to help you learn on the job. ( https://opr.ca.gov/planning/land-use/local-government/)  Compensation is $125 per meeting, averaging two meetings per month on the second and fourth Thursday. Applications for membership must be obtained by calling (209)754-6370 or through the Calaveras County Clerk-Recorder’s, Board of Supervisors Division, 891 Mtn. Ranch Rd, San Andreas, CA 95249, or you may apply on the County’s website at http://calaverascountyca.iqm2.com/Citizens/Board . Completed applications must be returned to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors

The County describes the duties of a Commissioner as follows:

“To hold public hearings, make decisions and recommendations on land use matters, including the General Plan, zone changes, subdivisions, divisions of land, use permits, reclamation plans and similar items. Serves as the Administrative hearing Board for the Code Compliance Unit (i.e. zoning violations, illegal camping, junk, building without permits, etc.).”

But a planning commissioner role is much more important than that.

As a planning commissioner you have a loud and meaningful voice about many important issues affecting your community. A good planning commission takes the time to make necessary improvements to plans related to housing, conservation, and public safety. A good planning commission places necessary conditions to ensure that new development does not harm existing communities. Your presence on the commission may be the deciding factor in making its work good or bad.

Below are a few examples of current Planning Commission activities. Click to read comments provided by the CPC related to each.
