CCWD Water Board * Election hopefuls start filing papers
Written by Mike Morris, The Union Democrat July 17, 2014 04:39 pm
Those seeking positions on various local water, school and fire boards have filed candidacy paperwork ahead of this fall’s general election.
The filing period for the Nov. 4 election opened Monday and will last until Aug. 8, with a five-day extension granted if an incumbent doesn’t file.
Seats for four of the five Calaveras County Water District directorships are up for election. CCWD Directors Don Stump and Scott Ratterman have already filed, while former Calaveras County supervisor Paul Stein has filed for the post held by Director Bob Dean. Both Dean and Director Dennis Dooley have said they don’t plan to seek reelection. The Angels Camp City Council has two seats — held by Jack Lynch and Scott Kelly — up for election. Lynch said he remains undecided if he will run again. Meanwhile, Kelly — appointed to the council earlier this year — said he has pulled nomination paperwork, but hasn’t “completely decided yet” if he will run. In Tuolumne County, positions are available on 12 school districts, five fire protection districts, three community services districts and two sanitary districts along with the Yosemite Community College District, Tuolumne Park and Recreation District and three seats on the Tuolumne Utilities District. A handful of potential candidates have started the process to run for office as well, mostly for school districts thus far. Those who have pulled paperwork include Gary Cook with Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District, Cathy Stone-Carlson at Jamestown School District, Kathy Francis at Sonora Elementary, Daniel Parks of Curtis Creek School District and Ronda Bailey at Twain Harte-Long Barn Union School District. Columbia Fire Protection District also generated some interest, as Stan Steiner and Matthew Foust have pulled papers as of Wednesday. Other seats up for election in Calaveras County include several school districts, community services districts, fire protection districts, public utility districts, sanitary districts and veterans memorial districts. In addition to CCWD, George Fry and Peter Oliver have filed for the Mark Twain Health Care District, Charles Moore is a candidate for the Calaveras Public Utility District and Clyde Weddle has filed for the San Andreas Park and Recreation District. Districts will only go on November’s ballot if more candidates file than the number of seats that are open. That won’t be determined until the end of the filing period next month. |
