Remembering Jan Schmidiger

Remembering Jan Schmidiger December 8, 1949 – September 19, 2022 Jan Schmidiger served on the Community Action Project (CAP) Governing Committee in the early years of CAP and the Calaveras Planning Coalition (CPC). As a building restoration expert, Jan had great vision. She did not merely see a structure “as is”. She saw a structure for what it once was and for what it could be in the future with a lot of thoughtful hard work.... Read More

Comment on the Flint Trail Access Road Mitigated Negative Declaration by March 23, 2023

Why do we care about this road project? This project is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The stated purpose of the road is to link Oak Creek Drive with Little John Road for secondary and emergency access for the existing community of Copper Valley Golf Club (formerly Saddle Creek Resort). However, the proposed road also extends south from Oak Creek Drive to the property line for the Tuscany Hills future development.  That development was tentatively... Read More

Cosgrove Creek Flooding – History and References

Cosgrove Creek in Valley Springs has been flooding for decades, and there has been a long history of various agencies attempting to address the issue. January of 2023 brought even more flooding without answers. Below you will find a wealth of references that help tell the story of Cosgrove Creek and what has been done – and what hasn’t been done – to protect the lives and properties of Calaveras County residents living in the floodplain.... Read More

Our September Letter to Editor: Now is the time for us to look at evacuation needs

COG is seeking public input on its Evacuation and Access Needs Assessment and Preparedness Plan.... Read More

Our July Letter to the Editor: A Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan can work for Citizens of Calaveras

The draft Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Plan being prepared by the County could help us secure outside funding for things we already need.  For example, many of our local-economy-boosting tourists have already switched to electric vehicles (have you noticed the Teslas?). Those vehicles need charging stations. So to keep our tourism-based economy competitive and create local jobs, we could adopt, fund, and implement a GHG Reduction plan to... Read More

GET INFORMED! See County Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy for Yourself

The Calaveras County Planning Commission has been working on its Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan throughout Spring 2022. This plan is required by the county and offers an opportunity to look at our climate impact problems, but is also a big opportunity to secure grant funding. The citizen-based Calaveras Planning Coalition has been watching this progress closely and sending comments, and sometime soon a public survey is expected to go out to all... Read More
