Boat restrictions urged at Tulloch

Tuolumne County leaders showed interest this week in a proposal to banish boats from a portion of Tulloch Reservoir’s Green Springs arm, a narrow inlet which is popular with boaters in the summer.
The Board of Supervisors expressed interest via a letter to the Tri-Dam Project, which operates Tulloch on behalf of Manteca- and Oakdale-area farmers and residents, but held off a decision for a future meeting.
“That lake’s way overcrowded, and way overused,” said Supervisor Karl Rodefer, who represents Jamestown and Columbia on the board. “Especially on weekends.”
The recommendation for cordoning off Green Springs was contained in a consultant’s report to Tri-Dam, done as part of the federal relicensing for the Tulloch Dam.
The dam’s relicensing is overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and can affect recreation activities, development, dam operations and just about every other aspect of lake management.
The relicensing process requires a wildlife management plan on the lake, and the study targeted the Green Springs Creek inlet as a potential zone for pond turtles and bats, according to county officials.
