CHS students & CPC lobby for Moke Wild & Scenic

Senate Bill 1199 – sponsored by Sen. Lori Hancock, a Democrat out of Berkeley, and introduced April 4 – aims to protect a stretch of 37 miles of the Mokelumne River including the remaining free-flowing segments of the North Fork and main stem of the Mokelumne River. A Wild and Scenic River designation gives California waterways protection from many future impacts, particularly dams.

Not everyone supports the designation, including directors for the Calaveras County Water District, who voted to send a letter of opposition at their meeting last week.

But plenty of supporters showed up at Tuesday’s hearing and included Mother Lode business owners, current and former elected officials, residents, river recreationists, tourism promoters, clean water advocates, educators and high school students – including a handful of young people from Calaveras High School’s Earth Club
