EBMUD Report Reflects Foothill Opposition to Pardee Expansion

In mid-September, EBMUD issued a report on the latest round of public hearings on EBMUD’s proposal to build a higher Pardee Dam and to convert more of the Mokelumne River into a flat water reservoir.  The report includes notes and quotes from the many speeches, letters, and emails of Calaveras County residents, business owners, organizations, and public officials opposing the new dam.  (Click here to go to the report)  The report appendices, that include the entire text of people’s letters and attachments, can be found on the EBMUD website at: .

The message of public opposition to the new dam was loud and clear.  At their workshop on September 27, three of the seven EBMUD Board members supported removing the New Pardee Dam from the list of projects under consideration for their long range plan.

While staff was explaining how some water projects are “near term” projects and others are “long-term options,” Director McIntosh stated that New Pardee needed a category of its own: the “Fat Chance” project.  In later comments regarding the content of the long range plan, she stated, “I can no longer defend Pardee staying in.”  Director Andy Katz said that he wanted to avoid the expense of continuing to plan for the expansion of Pardee Reservoir.  Director Linney began his comments by calmly explaining the viability of other water supply alternatives.  However, when addressing the question of whether the new Pardee dam should be in EBMUD’s 2040 Water Supply Management Plan and EIR, Director Linney emphatically exclaimed, “Take it out for God’s sake.”
