State Redistricting Process May Change Calaveras Representatives
The California Citizens Redistricting Commission has issued new draft maps for the state Senate, Assembly and Congressional districts which could change who represents Calaveras County. The new congressional district maps put Calaveras in the Foothill District along with other foothill counties such as Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Alpine, Toulumne and Mariposa instead of aligning it with Sacramento as they have in the past. The formerly sprawling Senate district has been modified to more closely resemble the new Assembly district, also entitled Foothill. They would run from Placer to the northern portion of Fresno in the case of the Senate and just short of Fresno in the case of the Assembly. The consolidation of foothill counties could represent an opportunity for better representation of all the foothill counties who share similar interests in the areas of planning for growth, water rights, environmental concerns, tourism and funding of public services .
