Calaveras Planning Coalition Receives Third Grant from the Fund for Wild Nature
On December 1, 2021, the Community Action Project/Calaveras Planning Coalition received news of support from the Fund for Wild Nature for the third consecutive year. The Fund has been “investing in feisty grassroots action since 1982” by providing “small grants for North American campaigns to save native species and wild ecosystems, with particular emphasis on actions designed to defend threatened wilderness and biological diversity.” Learn more about the Fund for Wild Nature on their website: https://fundwildnature.org/.
In the award letter, Fund for Wild Nature President Marnie Gaede wrote, “We are very pleased to support your dynamic and forward- thinking work, and we look forward to reading all about your successes.” CAP/CPC is grateful to the Fund for investing in our organization to help us pursue litigation against the updated Calaveras County General Plan adopted in November 2019 and, thereby, protect habitat for 34 special status species from development.
The Planning Coalition was forced to sue the county over the updated plan, because it violates state planning law and the California Environmental Quality Act. (You may read the writ of mandate here: https://calaverascap.com/12-8-19-petition-for-gpu-writ-of-mandate/.) After failed settlement negotiations in 2020, the Coalition is facing a protracted litigation process in addition to our continuing land use planning advocacy. Again, our thanks to the Fund for Wild Nature!
